Fasting in 2026

FASTING IN 2026

Lean into a new beginning for 2026.

Challenge yourself this year to think about commencing the year with fasting. It can be a very rewarding experience.

It will help you to connect to Jesus by humbling and surrendering yourself to hear from Him.

There are many reasons why you should fast. There is fasting for your health (not a spiritual fast) and there is fasting because you truly want to convict yourself about your own strength of faith within your belief in Jesus.

Either way it will strengthen your mind and you should feel refreshed at the end of it.

You dont have to do it for 40 days straight. It could be a week or two or up to 21 days.

FIRSTLY - Always check with your doctor to make sure you are ready for it, if you have any sort of illness at all.

Here are some good reasons to fast:

Firstly to feel closer to God.

Getting closer to God is an amazing experience and will help you to have the peace you need to enjoy your life.

To repent and humble oneself before the Lord.

It is an opportunity to look back and think of what has transpired in your life that you may need to ask for forgiveness for and can be very humbling to say the least. Humbling oneself calms your spirit and strengthens you for what the Lord has for you in the future.

For deliverance and protection.

There may be things happening in your world that have been hanging around for a while and bothering you. It could also be causing you the fear of being harmed in some way. Seeking the Lords protection is paramount to having more peace in your day to day walk with the Lord. Psalm 91 offers amazing strength and blessings from the Lord

To be able to minister to others effectively.

In order to effectively continue to minister to people. Fasting helps you to stay strong of mind and to reach out to the Lord in order to seek the answers you will need to advise and help others.

To overcome temptation.

Temptataion is something we are all battling with every day. There are all sorts of temptations in this wrold we live in. Drawing closer to God and taking the step to fast can increase your ability to focus and not be so tempted.

To seek guidance and direction.

Seeking guidance and protection are the very reasons why the Lord wants us to get close to Him. It not only helps us to focus but also helps us to form a friendship with the Lord knowing that He is always there with us helping us to complete something you know only the Lord can help you with.

FASTING FROM FOODS

Deciding how long to fast

Its best to take baby steps at first and always Seek medical advice before commencing any sort of fasting.

If your doctor gives you the go ahead then maybe get up tomorrow and fast from breakfast. Dont eat but only drink fluids to keep you hydrated until lunch.

For lunch substain from something you would normally like to have like the meat in your sandwich or that piece of chicken or beef. Go vegetarian for the day.

The gap between lunch and dinner can be long!

Telling yourself you are a child of God. You are strong. You have great willpower. You are doing this to be faithful to your Lord and Saviour out of respect for what He has done for us. Can be a good start to the afternoon. When you start to feel those hunger pains, grab a glass of water and make some time to speak to the Lord. Maybe put on some worship music, sit and pray to Him asking Him to keep you strong as you go through the day. Talk to Him about your concerns for the year ahead in the hope He will respond as the year moves forward.

Dinner:

Think about what you have planned for dinner. Is there something that you really love? Then in order to fast from foods you love it would be best to remove it from the dish.

If you have some health issues that may hinder your attempts at fasting:

Please contact your Doctor in regards to how you can fast effectively without hinderance to your health.

It is important to keep hydrated and focus on how you are feeling as you go along. If you find it to hard then maybe doing just the morning fast may be a better choice than a long afternoon that is affecting you. The Lord understands all of your needs and is our forgiving God. He would not be mad at you for giving up. He would be happy that you even tried!

Focus on Spiritual Gain:

The goal that you should be experiencing is spiritual depth, not weight loss or to appear pious to others. It is a personal journey that the Lord and you are going on together. Never use it to just lose some weight. Always think of it as an opportunity to be closer to the Lord and to see what it is He has for you in the coming year. It will strengthen your resolve and help you to face the year with a new perspective about your faithfulness and who you are in Christ.
